Flying or Not Flying

By Mick Bassett

Before anyone starts on 'Flying Birds do not need a Standard', have a look at this website - my local Club. (opens in a new window)

Impressed? Yes I was!

This Club does not cater for all the High Flying breeds, which often have their own club but have the same basic system - proof of flying by approved judges, before it can go in an exhibition pen!

So added to the breeds below could be:

Danzig, Stralsunder, Vienna High Flyer, Budapest High Flyer, Memeler, Grunwin, Old Austrian Lapwing, Flying Hamburg Kalotten (Helmet) etc, etc.

To give a quick run-down on the 'Flying' system here:

All Flying breeds are grouped into their appropriate flying type.
ALL have their own FLYING Standard for Evaluation, according to the group.
ALL breeds are flown and assessed (not just Birmingham Rollers and FlyingTipplers).

Yes they have a 'Beauty Show' where birds are judged on 'Form' but ALL birds must have PROOF of being flown before they can enter!

These are Flying breeds and some are true dual-purpose breeds.

ALL are bred to a Breed Standard, for Form and for Flight.

There is also another 'Fancy' breed where, even in the Fancy shows ALL birds must prove flying skills before being bred from, that is the Ringslagers and no one gets a 'Master Breeder' award without their birds succeeding in both, skill and beauty!
Below are the Groups and these are the breeds, each bird or loft assessed before they can be entered into the Flying exhibition (shows) here in Germany.
These Flying shows are very interesting as you will often see breeds not yet recognised for pure 'Fancy' exhibitions here.

Many of the breeds listed below could be entered into 'Fancy' competition and win, maybe not highest honours but certainly 'Breed Typical'.
This list of breeds is not exhaustive, other breeds are/can be flown, this is a Regional Group (where I live) but based on the National System.
(usw means 'etc', so other breeds according to the Group.)
